Awards season came to to a high fashion close Sunday night with the coup de grâce of all red carpets, The Academy Awards. There were high highs and low lows…but we’ll get to the missteps later. Let’s start this off on a high note. Both white gowns and red lips were huge trends on the carpet, and we loved how Milla Jovovich and Rooney Mara worked this look. For her first time attending the Oscars, Milla knocked it out of the park in a stunning one-shoulder Elie Saab gown and Jacob and Company jewelry. Rooney Mara rocked the red carpet in a Givenchy Couture number that she bravely wore without a single diamond to accompany it. Jessica Chastain, who we think is beyond beautiful but has made one red carpet faux pas after another all season long finally nailed it in a black and gold Alexander McQueen gown that was all kinds of haute. Honorable mentions go to Meryl Streep in Lanvin, Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji and Leslie Mann in Roberto Cavalli.
Now on to the worst dressed of the night. (We apologize in advance.) The Artist may have been a charming film, but Berenice Bejo’s mint green beaded Elie Saab dress was not – and the matching clutch was the nail in the coffin for this look. Jennifer Lopez is apparently training to compete in women’s figure skating and just stopped off at the Oscars on her way to the rink. We loved Shailene Woodley in The Descendants, but wish she would have picked something that made her look as young and fresh as she is. (We think her Valentino dress would have looked smashing on Helen Mirren.) Sadly, Melissa McCarthy’s Marina Rinaldi dress was a mess on many levels – from the fabric to the silhouette, color and embellishment – and we think she needs to fire her stylist, stat. Also (not pictured above) quite disappointing were Sandra Bullock in an ill-fitting Marchesa dress that did nothing for her figure and Melissa Leo in a shockingly bad sequined Reem Acra shirt dress.

Let’s start with the good news first. There were some major fashion moments on the red carpet at Sunday night’s Golden Globes. Angelina rocked it in a directional Atelier Versace gown that was all kinds of high fashion. We loved the strong shoulders on Emma Stone’s wispy Lanvin gown and the cool eagle belt accent she added. If Charlize ever stops getting great roles (doubtful), we’re pretty sure that catwalker could be her fall-back career, as she looked very supermodel-esque in this plunging Dior gown that very few actresses could have pulled off.
And now…on to the bad news. Amanda Peet wore a wedding cake designed by Marc Jacobs. (Sorry, Marc and Amanda, we love you, but this is not one of Amanda’s better looks.) Lea Michele wore a slinky Elie Saab dress that would have looked killer on Halle Berry five years ago, but ending up looking a lot like a gaudy ice skating costume on Lea. And, we really, really wanted to like the brush-stroke Monique Lhullier gown that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s two-year old stylist daughter picked out for her, but it just didn’t work on her tiny frame. Maybe Charlize could have pulled that one off. We’d love to see a fashion face-off.

Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz has garnered a major cult following for the label’s classic ballerina flats – including Mrs. Kutcher herself, Demi Moore. Besides the wide array of colors and materials, the classic ballerinas feature a 20 mm hidden wedge that make them easier to wear all day long than a completely flat pair of, well, flats. Demi is such a fan that she even tweeted a photo of herself in a sea of Lanvin ballerinas. If you’d like to find yourself in a similar situation, check out our select of Lanvin flats here. Catalina Su is the makeup artist behind all the flawless faces at E!, including E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic and correspondents Catt Sadler and Ashlan Gorse. Last Friday, we hosted a beauty event at the boutique and Lina gave some lucky shoppers a makeover. If you missed it, don’t worry: She shared some of her best-kept beauty secrets with us too. Read on to find out her springtime get-gorgeous advice.
1. Tint your brows
Get your brows tinted one shade lighter than your natural color. It makes you appear softer and younger. I do mine year-round, but if there’s a season to try it, it’s definitely spring (and into the summer).
2. Rock sheer, shiny lips
It’s springtime and you want to look fresh and effortless…not like you tried too hard. To achieve this, just slick on a sheer, shimmery gloss and stash your heavy cream lipsticks until fall. I really like Palladio lip glosses. They are light in texture and go on pretty and sheer.
3. Blend your foundation like a pro
The face, neck, chest and arms are all different colors. Since all of these areas are exposed in the warm weather months, you want to make sure they match as closely as possible. In order to achieve this, match your foundation to your arm rather than your neck. (Your neck is always shaded by your face, so it’s usually lighter than your face and you’ll end up choosing a foundation that’s too light if you go this route.) Then, use a self tanner on your neck. I love Clarins ‘Delectable’ Self Tanning Mousse with Mirabelle Oil. Nothing beats its subtle golden color. And when your neck has a little bit of color, everything blends from face to arm. Do it weekly and I promise you’ll notice how much better everything looks. A bonus tip: Use a BeautyBlender sponge to spread and blend your foundation – I’m obsessed with this product!
4. Don’t forget the sunscreen
Always use a foundation with a strong sunscreen. I like Shiseido Sun Protection Liquid Foundation SPF 40 because it’s water resistant and high in SPF. The coverage is beyond amazing. However, Shiseido’s colors are not the best, so I recommend mixing it with whatever foundation you are currently using. I always mix my foundations to create a customized color.
