Michelle Obama stepped out for the State Dinner for the People’s Republic of China in a flame-red, floral print Alexander McQueen dress on Wednesday night. The dress is from Sarah Burton’s first collection since taking over as creative director of the label after McQueen’s death last year.
As far as First Ladies go, Michelle has always been orbiting in a sartorial solar system millions of light years away from our past few Presidential wives. (Who could forget the buttoned-up aesthetic of Barbara Bush’s triple-strand pearl choker, Hillary’s ill-fitting pantsuits, and Laura’s endless rotation of drab, wool blazer-and-skirt combos?) But Michelle really hasn’t worn anything that spectacular as of late, and we were beginning to worry that she’d lost her edge. But now she’s proven that she’s back, and it’s good to see her rocking one of our favorite designers so boldly.
